2026 MTV VMAs Highlights
At the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards, Madonna had a remarkable night, winning multiple awards including the prestigious Artist of the Year. Her total awards tally for the evening reached seven, also securing wins for Best Collaboration and Best Dance.
The event took place at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, hosted by Snoop Dogg. During the show, Kacey Musgraves paid homage to the late Dolly Parton by performing “I Will Always Love You,” just a month after Parton’s passing.
Meanwhile, Taylor Swift’s music video “The Fate of Ophelia” earned her the Video of the Year award. Swift, who wrote and directed the video, dedicated her award to Parton and was honored with the first-ever Artist Director Honors, presented by her friend Dakota Johnson. She also claimed an award for Best Direction due to her work on “Opalite.”
Madonna kicked off the ceremony alongside Sabrina Carpenter and Charli XCX, marking her return after 23 years since her last VMA performance. She performed “Bring Your Love” with Carpenter and “Danceteria” with XCX, with appearances from guests like Julia Garner and Seth Rogen.
Audience reactions to Madonna’s performance were mixed. Some fans criticized it as a “train wreck,” while others praised her, referring to her as “THEE QUEEN” and expressing pride in her artistic vision. Despite the split opinions, Madonna ultimately triumphed over competitors like Taylor Swift and Ariana Grande to win Artist of the Year. In her acceptance speech, she humorously thanked her fingers and reflected on her career dating back to the inaugural VMAs in 1984 when she performed “Like A Virgin.”
During her performance, she faced a wardrobe mishap when her shoe fell off, which she described as a “little problem.” She attempted to recover gracefully, but ended up exposing herself, leading to a humorous reflection on the differences in audience reactions then and now.
Throughout the last year and a half, she mentioned focusing on finding herself and creating music true to her artistic intent, reinforcing the idea of self-belief as critical for all artists. Madonna also won Best Dance for “Confessions II – The Film,” and during that acceptance speech, she shared her love for dance, highlighting its importance in her life and the unity it brings to people.
She also received the Moon Person for Best Collaboration with Sabrina Carpenter for “Bring Your Love.”
Kacey Musgraves’ tribute to Dolly Parton was a standout moment. The tribute began with a video of Parton before Musgraves took the stage in a vibrant pink gown to perform the iconic song. Parton passed away at the age of 80 on August 25.
The night also featured a tribute to Nirvana, which received the Video Vanguard Award. Swift premiered her music video for “Patient Zero” during the event, which stars Dakota Johnson and Colin Farrell. Other performers included Lisa, Sienna Spiro, and Bruno Mars, with Spiro winning Best New Artist and Lisa taking home the Best Pop Award.
