A year after being admitted to intensive care with a bacterial infection, Madonna is looking back with gratitude on the past year.

“One year ago today I recovered from a life-threatening illness, returned home from the hospital and could barely stand in my backyard holding a sparkler,” Madonna wrote, alongside a photo of friends enjoying a Fourth of July celebration. “My miraculous recovery and an amazing year have followed. Thank you God. Life is good!”

Madonna has been forced to reschedule some dates on her Celebration World Tour in June 2023 due to health issues.

“On Saturday, June 24th, Madonna developed a serious bacterial infection which required her to be hospitalized in intensive care for several days,” her longtime manager, Guy O’Seary, wrote on Instagram at the time. “Her health is improving but she is still undergoing treatment. She is expected to make a full recovery.”

According to People magazine, in March, the “Like a Virgin” singer recounted her “near-death experience” at a sold-out show in Los Angeles, telling fans that the first thing she said when she woke up from an artificially induced coma four days later was “no.”
“I believe that was God saying to me: ‘Do you want to come? Do you want to come with me? No,'” Madonna said.
During the concert, she gave a shout-out to the doctors in the audience.

“I called every other day and asked [my doctor] “Why don’t I have energy, when will I have energy again, when will I be myself again, when will I be on tour again?” she said.

“All my dad would say was, ‘Go outside and get some sunshine.’ It was so hard for me to walk from the house to the backyard and get some sunshine. It sounds crazy, but it was so hard.”
