Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro Detained in U.S. Prison
Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro has been taken into custody and will remain at the Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC) in Brooklyn, where other notable figures like Ghislaine Maxwell and Sam Bankman-Fried were previously housed. His apprehension occurred during an early morning operation led by U.S. forces at a highly secure residence in Venezuela.
Maduro faces several serious charges, including narco-terrorism conspiracy, conspiracy to import cocaine, and possession of both a machine gun and a destructive device aimed at the U.S. His wife and son are also named in the indictment.
Interestingly, as Maduro awaits trial, he will share space with Luigi Mangione, who is facing charges related to the assassination of UnitedHealthcare’s CEO, Brian Thompson.
Former Federal Bureau of Prisons deputy director Judy Garrett noted that she anticipates Maduro will be placed in a special housing unit at MDC due to his high-profile status. “I hope he will be kept in a special housing unit,” she mentioned, adding that such units often house other well-known individuals.
In a recent interview, President Donald Trump remarked that Maduro’s capture may have been executed hastily by American special forces. He indicated that plans had been in the works for several days. “Then suddenly the situation opened up,” Trump explained, highlighting how tightly guarded Maduro’s residence was.
Trump provided details about the residence itself, referring to it as more of a fortress with heavy fortifications. “He was in a house that was more like a fortress than a house,” he described, illustrating the challenges faced during the operation. Despite the extensive security measures, Maduro could not reach a secured area of the home in time.
Ultimately, a U.S. Army Delta Force unit conducted the operation that led to Maduro’s arrest. Reports suggest that intelligence from the CIA played a critical role in tracking the Venezuelan leader down.
