Maggie Gyllenhaal’s Daughter Arrested During Columbia Protest
On Wednesday, there was quite a commotion at Columbia University in New York, where the daughter of actress Maggie Gyllenhaal was reportedly taken into custody amid a protest. The situation escalated when anti-Israel activists entered the library.
According to a source, 18-year-old Ramona Sarsgaard received a ticket for criminal trespassing. It’s important to note that she’s a current student at Columbia College.
The report indicated that Sarsgaard was among approximately 80 individuals arrested, all while students were gearing up for their final exams in the Butler Library.
As of Thursday, Columbia University had issued at least 65 interim suspensions to students involved during the protest. It remains unclear if Sarsgaard was among those suspended.
Reports suggest that nearly 80 protesters were detained as they disrupted activities at the library. Some of the protesters were reportedly wearing concealed items like kaffiyehs, and they declared the library a “liberated zone” in support of Palestinian rights.
Video clips showed demonstrators entering the library, chanting “Free, free, free Palestine!”
Following the library invasion, Secretary of State Marco Rubio commented that such actions by “thugs” were unacceptable in the country.
There were reports of injuries among Columbia University public safety officers during the protest, and conflicts arose between protesters and the New York Police Department’s security team.
Additional footage captured moments of chaos outside the library, where protesters were heard chanting about respecting martyrs.
According to reports, police arrested 19 men and 61 women during the demonstration. Protesters even renamed the Butler Library as the “Basel Al-Araj Popular University,” demanding that the institution sever ties with Israel while chanting their slogans and climbing onto tables.
