Magic Johnson criticizes the Celtics following the record $10 billion sale of the Lakers

Magic Johnson Praises Sale of Lakers to Mark Walter for $10 Billion

Magic Johnson, the legendary player for the Lakers, has expressed his enthusiasm over the recent agreement to sell the team to Mark Walter, owner of the Dodgers, for a staggering $10 billion. He even managed to reference the Celtics positively.

This sale, which is set to be the largest ever for a sports team, marks a significant change as the control shifts from one family that has been associated with the Lakers for years.

“My sister, Jeannie Bass, did a fantastic job making this deal and choosing the right person to uphold the Lakers’ legacy and traditions of victory,” Johnson shared on social media shortly after the news broke.

He mentioned the Celtics’ sale earlier in March, which also influenced his perspective on the Lakers’ value.

“When the Celtics sold for $6 billion, it made me realize the Lakers must be worth at least $1 billion!” he noted.

Johnson referred to Walter as both a “business partner” and “friend,” highlighting their connection as part of the Dodgers’ ownership group. He praised Walter’s leadership as CEO and chairman of TWG Global.

“Mark Walter is the ideal choice to take care of the Laker brand,” Johnson stated, reflecting on Walter’s achievements with the Dodgers. “He has been a winner for the past 12 years, with two World Series titles and 11 NL West Division championships!”

In another post, Johnson emphasized Walter’s dedication to victory and excellence, saying he is committed to “doing everything the right way.”

The Bus Family has owned the Lakers since 1979, having purchased the franchise for $67.5 million from Jack Kent Cook.

Walter’s sports interests extend beyond the Dodgers; he also holds stakes in the Sparks and Cadillac Formula 1 teams, and he’s a major investor in the professional women’s hockey league. Additionally, he has a minority interest in Blueco, which has significant ties to Chelsea FC in the Premier League.

“He is going to invest the necessary resources to win!” Johnson commented. “It’s clear why Jeannie sold the team to Mark Walter. They are both competitive, have generous hearts, and prefer to stay out of the limelight. This makes perfect sense.”

Johnson concluded with a note of excitement for Lakers fans around the world, expressing his happiness about the new direction of the team.
