Magic Johnson, a Basketball Hall of Famer, received some criticism for endorsing Karen Bass in the Los Angeles mayoral election. In a video shared on her social media, Bass highlighted their long friendship, and Johnson expressed support based on her efforts to tackle homelessness and reduce crime rates.
However, Johnson, who resides in Beverly Hills, faced disapproval for weighing in on the mayoral race from a place not represented in the voting districts. “She’s doing a great job. Mayor Bass deserves a second term, and I’m excited to support her,” Johnson stated in the video. He praised her work, saying they look forward to continuing her mission for the city.
Bass welcomed his endorsement, expressing gratitude for Johnson’s longstanding commitment to the community. “Magic has invested his heart into this city long before anyone asked him. His belief in my ability to change Los Angeles means a lot,” she wrote online.
Notably, Johnson did not address Bass’s response to the devastating wildfires in 2025, which were significant issues in the race, particularly helping challenger Spencer Pratt gain traction. Pratt has been vocal, criticizing Bass over her wildfire response.
Interestingly, Lakers owner Jeanie Buss recently donated $1,800 to Pratt’s campaign, which is the maximum legal contribution allowed, suggesting a possible backing of his efforts against Bass. Meanwhile, Pratt was seen with Bass at a recent Lakers playoff game.
