Bill Maher Critiques SNL’s Portrayal of Conservatives
On a recent episode of “Club Random,” host Bill Maher took aim at the liberal writers of Saturday Night Live for their portrayal of conservatives, suggesting they rely on outdated stereotypes. During a discussion with fitness expert Gillian Michaels, Maher reflected on American culture and remarked on Donald Trump’s outsider appeal, even humorously noting that he might be called “dead” by critics.
Michaels expressed her disbelief that Democrats continue to alienate Trump’s supporters, calling it “deplorable.” She referenced Hillary Clinton’s infamous comments that branded Trump backers as a “basket of deplorables,” implying that such divisive rhetoric is still prevalent.
She also shared her experiences with Tom Hanks, whom she described as personable in private yet problematic when it comes to representing Trump supporters on the show. Hanks took on a role as “Doug,” a messy caricature of a Southern Trump supporter wearing a MAGA hat, in an SNL sketch where humor conflicts with real-world issues.
Maher echoed Michaels’ sentiments, stating he found the portrayal misleading. “You’re just hysterical,” he said, addressing those behind such depictions. He labeled the misrepresentation of Trump supporters as “zombie lies,” emphasizing that it’s inaccurate to claim that all MAGA supporters are dismissive of interactions with Black people. He acknowledged that while comedy often involves exaggeration, this particular approach feels overly sensitive.
Delving into the essence of comedy, Maher noted that a successful joke has to contain an element of truth. He shared his frustration as a liberal who dislikes these portrayals, insisting that when a comedic premise lacks authenticity, it falls flat. He concluded by suggesting that everyone seems eager to play the hatred card for clicks, even if that strategy has become outdated.
