Comedian Bill Maher said in an interview aired Thursday that Vice President Harris needs to prove that she is not “a stealth version of the worst excesses of the left.”
“I think Kamala's big challenge here is to convince undecided voters that she's not doing what they suspect is some of the stealth version of the left's worst excesses. Convince them that there isn't.” told MSNBC Joe Scarborough “Morning Joe”
“I'm tired of extreme ideas and extremists dominating the discussion,” Maher said in an interview. “They have megaphones and we hear them a lot, but I don't think they represent what most people in this country are talking about.”
Former President Trump tried to paint Harris as a far-leftist, calling her opponent “comrade Kamala” and releasing photos of her drinking at a communist event. The Trump campaign has relentlessly attacked Harris for her support for progressive policies such as Medicare for All, a ban on fracking, and government funding for gender reassignment surgeries for prisoners and detained immigrants. .
While Harris has changed positions on many of these policies, she has received high-profile support from Republicans, including former Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) and her father, former Vice President Cheney. He strives to convey his moderate credentials.
Maher, a frequent critic of President Trump, called on Democrats last Friday on HBO to stop thinking that an “October surprise” will “save President Trump a second term.”
“We're so used to thinking there's always going to be a surprise in October that it actually seems strange when it doesn't happen,” Maher said.
With 12 days left in this year's election period, Ms. Harris and Mr. Trump are competing for undecided voters in battleground states such as Pennsylvania, North Carolina and Wisconsin. The Hill/Decision Desk headquarters' average national poll shows Ms. Harris leading Mr. Trump by just 0.9 percentage points.
The Hill has reached out to Harris' campaign for comment.
