Maher mocks Hegseth's military gathering: 'A tough-minded leadership'

Comedian Bill Maher chose not to comment on Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s speech to top military leaders on Friday.

Earlier this week, Hegseth and Trump met with about 800 high-ranking military officials in Quantico, Virginia. The defense secretary took this opportunity to discuss plans for reforming the Department of Defense, which included new health standards.

“That’s the kind of thing you want to focus on,” Maher remarked. “We aim to gather the most crucial figures in our command structure together. Let’s hope the doors are locked from the outside.”

He added that Hegseth spoke to attendees about how they connect through TEDX and noted the military’s various characteristics. “It’s too gay, too awake, too sloppy, too well-maintained, and, well, too obese,” Maher quipped, drawing attention to certain peculiarities in the military.

Continuing with his theme on grooming, Maher pointed out Hegseth’s use of the term “No More Beardos.” He remarked, “I’m serious; he actually used that term. It’s apparently a blend of ‘fairy’ and ‘beard,’ which I’ve never heard before.”

Maher pointed out that nearly half of Hegseth’s speech revolved around the idea of the ‘warrior spirit’ and traditional masculinity, while the other half seemed to focus on personal grooming advice.

He noted, “Really. Because Hegseth asked, ‘What product are you using?'”

During the gathering, Hegseth addressed the generals about enforcing strict fitness standards, stating that all military personnel would have to pass physical fitness tests, regardless of rank.

“Honestly, it’s tiring to witness formations that include, you know, less-than-fit individuals,” he said. “It’s unacceptable to see overweight generals and admirals in the Pentagon and beyond.”

On grooming standards, Hegseth asserted, “No more facial hair, long hair, or other individual expressions.” He emphasized sticking to established grooming guidelines, likening it to the ‘broken windows’ policing theory.

“If you allow small things to slide, larger issues will follow,” he explained. “If you want a beard, you can join the special forces. If not, I suggest shaving.”

His remarks received praise from Vice President Vance and podcaster Joe Rogan. California Governor Gavin Newsom responded with humor about the president’s weight, remarking, “Maybe it’s time for the best commander-in-chief to step aside.”
