Maher: Some Immigrants Are Now Resisting Assimilation

Maher Discusses Immigration and American Values

During an episode of HBO’s “Real Time” on Friday, Bill Maher addressed the ongoing conversation around immigration, noting that while many immigrants still aspire to assimilate, there are some who seem to have a different perspective that rejects this idea.

He introduced new rules regarding the American Dream, emphasizing that embracing American values is crucial. “Immigration is a major issue in today’s electoral politics,” he remarked, adding that both political sides have taken extreme positions—referring to Biden’s open-door approach and Trump’s strict policies. Maher expressed a belief that America is returning to what it used to excel at, which he framed as a sort of ‘theft.’ He acknowledged that diligent immigrants hail from various backgrounds, contributing to America, but he pointed out that while many hold onto the desire to integrate, a few approach it with a melting pot mentality.

Maher continued, “You might not appreciate every single aspect of America, and that’s okay. We don’t either, which is what led to the creation of Yelp. But once you bypass ICE, America isn’t all that bad. We’re saying it’s fine to enjoy your grandma’s cooking or communicate in your native tongue at home, as well as celebrate your religious traditions. Your food, your art, and your family matter here. However, there’s one fundamental question: How do you feel about Western civilization? That’s non-negotiable.”

He used gay rights as a case in point for values that should remain unchanged, highlighting incidents where gay cruise ships have been turned away from Turkey and Egypt. Maher noted that these countries assert their cultural standards, suggesting that a similar attitude is necessary within the U.S. “We shouldn’t accept homophobia here,” he asserted. He went on to discuss Western principles around the treatment of women, declaring them as non-negotiable—not because they represent white culture, but rather because they embody liberal values. “It’s not inherently racist to wish for a stronger union, but certain principles, like the separation of religion and state, are too essential to alter, and I would convey the same message to Christian nationalists.”

Maher concluded by stating that his concerns are not about the demographic shift of non-whites becoming the majority. “I have no issue with that,” he claimed. “It’s not about race; it’s about the possibility of liberal values being overshadowed by those that are not.”
