Comedian and media commentator Bill Maher suggests that Democrats should try to win over tech billionaire Elon Musk, especially since Musk has been distancing himself from President Trump.
Maher criticized a recent idea from a Democratic strategist advocating for a version of Joe Rogan for the party. He questioned why Democrats lost touch, despite having previously aligned with Musk.
“He voices his concerns about Trump’s actions. It’s reminiscent of a disgruntled ex-employee like Musk, who, much like Joe, was seen as a liberal but has shifted due to negative attitudes and ideas,” Maher observed.
He recalled the backlash Musk faced after hosting Saturday Night Live in 2021, where cast members showed him disdain for being wealthy.
“You don’t need to win me back; I’ve always been here. But for Americans, including Joe and Elon, you have to address them. The good news is you can do it,” he remarked on Friday night.
Maher highlighted Musk’s recent critiques of the Biden administration and indicated that Musk’s previously praised relationship with Trump now appears shaky.
The billionaire, alongside former government advisors, has been vocal in supporting the formation of a third party, alleging misconduct by Trump and even linking him to Jeffrey Epstein’s files. Trump hinted he may cut federal contracts related to Musk’s companies.
“I think it’s essential to engage those voters who are contemplating change,” Maher said regarding the situation with Musk. “Maybe this will mark a quiet shift as both Elon and Joe appear to lean towards a different side,” he mused.
After significant losses in the 2024 elections, Democrats are working on reshaping their image, solidifying their support base, and finding effective ways to confront Trump. They’re also on the lookout for emerging leadership.
Democrats have expressed dissatisfaction with their attempts to attract male voters, particularly those who supported Trump, contrasting it with the GOP’s effective outreach through mediums like podcasts.
“They really outmaneuvered us with these guys,” a high-profile Democratic strategist admitted. “They connected with male voters exactly where they are, and we didn’t have anything comparable.”
At least one Democratic House member is considering ways to invite Musk, a previous Democratic donor, back into the fold.
“If Biden criticized a major donor, Trump would have celebrated him the next day. When Biden refused to meet @robertkennedyjr, Trump welcomed him instead,” they posted on Social Media Platform X.
