Anti-Israel Activist Discusses Hamas Attacks
On October 7, 2023, Mahmoud Khalil, an anti-Israel activist, described the attacks by Hamas on Israel as “desperate” moments that Palestinians felt they needed to reach.
Khalil, a former Columbia University student, has been in detention for over three months due to his significant involvement in anti-Semitism protests on campus during the Trump administration. In an interview with New York Times journalist Ezra Klein, he attempted to explain his perspective on these deadly attacks against Israel, which resulted in more than 1,000 deaths, primarily among civilians.
Khalil expressed his horror at the events, saying, “For me, it was horrifying to have had to reach this moment in the Palestinian struggle.” His reflections came after Klein pressed him for clarification about his thoughts during the attacks.
“I remember not sleeping for a few days. I was very concerned about my health. It was heavy. I still remember. This could not have happened,” he added.
During the interview, Klein asked him what he meant by “this moment.” Khalil responded, mentioning the unsustainable situation in the region, referring to tensions that had existed until that day.
“You have an Israeli government that absolutely ignores the Palestinians,” he insisted. He criticized the Israeli government’s attempts to negotiate the Abraham Accords with Saudi Arabia while neglecting the Palestinian perspective.
“It was clear that it was becoming increasingly violent. By October 6th, more than 200 Palestinians had been killed by Israeli forces and settlers, over 40 of whom were children,” he noted.
Klein inquired if Khalil thought Hamas intended to provoke an all-out war with Israel or if the attack was an attempt to break the cycle of violence. Khalil replied, “It’s the latter, to break the cycle and break the Palestinians that aren’t being heard. For me, it’s a desperate attempt to tell the world that Palestinians are here and that Palestinians are part of the equation.”
“That was my interpretation of why Hamas attacked Israel on October 7th,” he said.
While discussing the identity of Khalil, the Trump administration had previously asserted that he was involved in activities “aligned with Hamas” during his time at Columbia University.
When Klein asked about the nature of the attacks, Khalil declined to label them as “mistakes,” although he acknowledged that targeting civilians is wrong. “Unfortunately, these horrible things have happened, but we cannot ask the Palestinians to become complete victims,” he asserted.
Khalil was arrested by federal immigration authorities on March 8th and spent 104 days at a detention center in Louisiana as the Trump administration sought to deport him. He is currently suing the federal government for $20 million in relation to his detention. Last month, in a heated CNN interview, he notably refrained from condemning Hamas for the attacks on October 7.
