Maine Senators Request Heating Oil Release

Maine’s two U.S. senators, Susan Collins, a Republican, and Angus King, an Independent, are calling on President Trump to release reserves of home heating oil. They believe this could help ease the financial strain caused by high prices.

In a letter to the president, they stated, “We write to request that you release home heating oil from the Northeast Home Heating Oil Reserve to protect Mainers from the very high prices that are imposing a difficult financial burden.” This letter was sent on Tuesday.

As of September 14, the average price for heating oil in Maine was reported at $5.77 per gallon, according to the Maine Department of Energy Resources. This represents a significant increase from the $3.32 average seen just two years prior, on September 15, 2025.

The senators emphasized the impact of international tensions: “The conflict in the Middle East and the Russia-Ukraine War have prevented additional heating oil from reaching the global market. Maine is particularly vulnerable to global supply shocks because our state imports much of our home heating oil.”

Collins, who has been in the Senate for nearly thirty years, is currently seeking re-election. King, though an Independent, is affiliated with the Senate Democratic caucus.

Across the nation, fuel prices continue to rise, with the AAA national average for diesel hitting a record $6.5276 on Tuesday. A slight decrease followed, but it was still high, at $6.5141 by Thursday. Meanwhile, the average price for regular gasoline was $4.4825, which remains below its peak of $5.0165 from June 2022.
