A new poll ahead of Super Bowl V shows that football has surpassed baseball as America’s sport by a wide margin.
Pew Research Center surveyed about 12,000 American adults on Monday and asked, “If you had to choose one sport as “America’s sport,” even if you don’t personally follow it, which sport would you choose? We announced the results of a new study asking, “Would you choose?” ” The majority of those surveyed (53%) answered “soccer.”
“More than half of Americans (53%) say that America’s sport is soccer, about twice as many as say baseball (27%). “They chose one of the four other sports asked: basketball (8%), soccer (3%), auto racing (3%) or hockey (1%),” the survey says. .

Soccer remained the top answer across all demographic groups, including whites, blacks, Hispanics, and Asian Americans. Men and women of all ages also agreed that football is “America’s sport.”
But racial groups were divided on which other sports to consider. White Americans were more likely to say baseball, while blacks and Asian Americans were more likely to say basketball, and Hispanic Americans were more likely to say soccer.
Although the majority of people rated soccer as “America’s sport,” they also acknowledged that people pay little attention to the sport.

“Most U.S. adults (62%) say they don’t follow professional or college sports very closely or at all, and a similar share (63%) say they don’t talk about sports with others. In fact, the center’s August survey found that what it calls sports “superfans” — those who follow sports very or very avidly — “Only 7% of adults talk about sports with others at least every day,” the study says.

No matter how much people pay attention to football season, the Super Bowl remains one of the most-watched events of the year. According to a report by Fox Sports, an average of 113 million people will Watched Super Bowl 15 on FOX, which boasts its largest audience since 2017.
