“He needs to reconsider whether he is the best candidate for the position. In my view, he is not,” Welch wrote. “In the national interest, I urge President Biden to withdraw from the race.”

Nearly half of respondents said the former president should step aside and someone else should be put at the top of the Republican field in November, including 88% of Democrats and 11% of Republicans.
Biden and his supporters have resisted growing calls for him to drop out of the race against Trump, with the president saying in an interview with ABC News’ George Stephanopoulos last week, “If the Almighty came down and said, ‘Joe, get out of the race,’ I would get out of the race. The Almighty is not going to come down.”
The Washington Post/ABC News/Ipsos poll was conducted July 5-9 among 2,431 people and has a margin of error of plus or minus 2 percentage points for the full sample. The figure included 825 registered Democrats, and has a margin of error of 3.5 percentage points.
