A controversial case surrounding a fatal stabbing between a 54-year-old man and several young people has ended with a 20-year prison sentence.
Nicolae Miu, of Prior Lake, Minnesota, was convicted in April of first-degree intentional homicide for stabbing five people, killing one teenager, during a 2022 brawl in Wisconsin’s Apple River near the Minnesota border. He was also convicted of four counts of first-degree recklessly endangering safety.
In one particularly moving moment from the case, the victim, AJ Martin, described how he ended up clutching his intestines in his hands while trying to break up a fight. He lifted his shirt to show horrific scars left by the attack.

The horrifying video showed the bloody aftermath of the incident, with 17-year-old Isaac Shuman from Minnesota being rushed to hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Miu’s defense team argued that she was attacked and fought back in self-defense, and pointed to inconsistencies in the testimony of young witnesses at the trial.
Miu told police that one of the teens had his cell phone and he thought he was being threatened, so he then stabbed the teens with a silver knife, investigators said.

Prosecutors had sought a 70-year prison sentence, and Miu will serve six years of extended probation after serving her sentence.
