Malik Nabors on Recovery and Future Outlook

After suffering a torn ACL and additional knee issues, Malik Nabors expressed his confusion with the question, “Why me?” However, he mentioned this was a turning point for him regarding self-doubt.

In his first press conference post-injury, Nabors hesitated to confirm whether he would be ready for the Giants’ 2026 season opener, although he noted that his recovery is “progressing well.”

“The date I aim for is when I feel physically secure enough to play,” Nabors stated. “If I’m not feeling good come Week 1, I won’t push it.”

Nabors, who was a finalist for the 2024 Offensive Rookie of the Year, had been making strides toward being among the NFL’s top receivers. That changed abruptly on September 28 when he felt immediate pain after an incomplete pass. Following the surgery he had on October 28, he continued to rely on a cane until he passed his physical exam last Sunday, which also marked the end of his season.

“It’s tough, but necessary,” he reflected. “I needed this moment to rediscover my passion. It feels like a hidden blessing. Talking to Jameis Winston helped me a lot; I kept wondering, ‘Why me?’ His response was, ‘Why not you?’ It’s about hitting rock bottom and figuring out how to climb back up.” He emphasized focusing on his rehab every day.

“My knee was in really bad shape, but the surgery was successful,” Nabors remarked, adding that fortunately, a second procedure wasn’t required.

According to multiple NFL sources, Nabors is viewed as a crucial asset that could make the Giants’ head coaching vacancy appealing. There’s a sense of curiosity about what style of offense the new coach will prioritize, especially after Brian Daboll’s significant role in quarterback decisions.

“I just want the ball, and I know I’ll get it,” Nabors asserted confidently.

Why shouldn’t he? With 127 receptions for 1,475 yards and nine touchdowns in his 19 games, he’s demonstrated his potential, although he played only a bit with starting quarterback Jackson Dart.

When asked about his aspirations, he dodged comparisons to players like Justin Jefferson or Ja’Marr Chase. “Each player is unique,” he said. “I want to highlight my talent. I’m not looking for a comparison. I aim to be a leader and inspire others to follow my path, not the reverse.”

Nabors is currently weighing options for his rehabilitation location—whether it will be in New York, Dallas (where he had surgery), his home in Louisiana, or perhaps another place. He also mentioned that his foot injury from the previous offseason has fully healed.

“I strive for improvement every year,” Nabors concluded. “I won’t doubt myself. I’ll be ready when the time feels right.”
