Malin Akerman makes a bold change in the Netflix series 'The Hunting Wives'

Malin Akerman Takes on a Bold New Role in “The Hunting Wives”

Malin Akerman’s newest role in “The Hunting Wives” marks a significant departure from the types of characters she’s typically known for. The Netflix series unfolds in eastern Texas, following a group of housewives while introducing some new faces from Boston. The narrative is packed with lies, shocking moments, hidden agendas, and even murder.

In this series, Akerman portrays Margo Banks, who is married to the ambitious Jed Banks, a politician turned oil tycoon played by Dermot Mulroney. The cast also features notable names like Brittany Snow, Chrissy Metz, Jaime Ray Newman, and Katie Lowes.

Before this role, Akerman was primarily recognized for her part as the wife of a hedge fund manager in the seven-season show “Billions,” which delves into the power dynamics of New York’s finance scene.

Historically, Akerman often found herself in romantic comedies such as “27 Dresses,” “Couples Retreat,” and “The Proposal.” Now, though, playing Margo—a seductive housewife surrounded by intrigue—seemed a natural fit for her. She shared that she quickly “fell in love” with the character, having devoured all eight episodes after reading the script.

Akerman highlighted Margo’s complexity, describing her as a “master manipulator” who is both lively and alluring. She expressed that taking on this character was irresistible given the immense depth it provided.

Furthermore, she spoke warmly about her on-screen husband. “I really admire Dermot. He’s just a wonderful person, not to mention his talent,” she said, reflecting on her admiration for Mulroney, known for his romantic role in “My Best Friend’s Wedding.”

The unique marriage between Jed and Margo adds more layers to the show. Their agreement allows Jed to pursue other women, while Margo is prohibited from being with other men, creating a dynamic that’s both humorous and tense. Akerman explained that at first glance, they seem like the quintessential trophy couple, but things complicate as the series progresses, revealing deeper issues at play.

As the series goes on, viewers witness Margo’s transformation, especially as Jed prepares for a gubernatorial campaign. Boundaries blur, and her character’s playful side must coexist with her cunning nature. Additionally, Margo’s relationship with a newcomer from Boston, played by Brittany Snow, not only includes camaraderie and adventure but hints at romantic tension too.

Akerman shared how much she treasured working alongside Snow, saying, “Our chemistry was effortless. We had a blast together, even in the more intimate scenes.” The lightheartedness they shared on set often broke any tension, making the filming experience enjoyable.

In terms of her character, Akerman described Margo as both captivating and complicated. “She’s navigating her own freedom while grappling with the expectations placed on her,” she noted, hinting at Margo’s underlying motivations.

Looking forward, Akerman is hopeful that Netflix will greenlight a second season for “The Hunting Wives,” especially following the twists and turns of the season finale. “Playing Margo has been a joy—there’s so much to explore, and I can’t wait to see where they take her next,” she said optimistically.
