Mamdani Criticized After Crowd Assaults NYPD Officers with Snowballs

Accusations Against NYC Mayor Following Snowball Incident

New York City Mayor Zoran Mamdani is facing criticism for allegedly inciting anti-police sentiment after a crowd hurled snowballs at NYPD officers during the recent snowstorm.

Footage captured at Washington Square Park shows some participants in a massive snowball fight targeting police officers. In response, the city’s police chief has initiated an investigation into the events that unfolded.

Former Governor Andrew Cuomo and ex-Mayor Eric Adams were quick to lash out at Mamdani, claiming that his comments against the police have cultivated disrespect for law enforcement. Cuomo pointed out in a social media post, “This is shameful, but a mayor with a history of calling police ‘racist, evil, and corrupt’ set the tone. Words have consequences…” He emphasized the need for the mayor to denounce the violence.

Adams condemned the snowball attack, labeling it a “disgusting act.” He expressed outrage that police officers, who were out in the harsh conditions, were targeted, stating, “This is an abhorrent act.” His message highlighted the importance of supporting law enforcement rather than degrading them.

Representative Nicole Malliotakis also spoke out against the incident, asserting that it reflects poorly on leadership in the city. She urged Mamdani and other officials to stand up against such attacks on police.

Mamdani eventually commented on the situation, calling for New Yorkers to show respect towards police officers. He acknowledged having seen videos of the incidents and stated, “Treat them with respect. If anyone is catching snowballs, it’s me.”

In contrast, NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch is advocating for action against those who targeted the police, describing the behavior as “shameful and criminal.” The department is currently investigating the incident after multiple reports of injuries to officers emerged.

City Council President Julie Menin remarked on the seriousness of the situation, noting that several officers suffered facial injuries. She emphasized that harming police officers should never be viewed as acceptable behavior.

Law enforcement unions have voiced their outrage, demanding arrests for those involved in the attack. The Police Benevolent Association described the actions as outrageous and highlighted the need for accountability among those involved.

Scott Munro, from the Detective Fund Association, stressed that the incident was not simply a case of fun, but rather a conscious attack on law enforcement. New York Governor Kathy Hochul echoed this sentiment, declaring that throwing objects at police officers is unacceptable.

The chaotic scene unfolded as hundreds participated in what was supposed to be an organized snowball fight. Reports indicate that officers faced harassment as they patrolled the park, unable to maintain order in the face of the unruly crowd, and at one moment, an individual reportedly placed a block of ice above an officer’s head.
