Zoran Mamdani, a Democratic socialist running for mayor in New York City, is facing significant criticism after expressing gratitude to “first responders” following a shooting in Midtown. This comes after he previously mentioned a desire to “defund” the New York Police Department (NYPD) and had made statements against it.
On Monday, Mamdani shared his heartbreak over the tragic shooting, mentioning the victims, their families, and NYPD officials in distress in a post on X. He expressed gratitude for the first responders on the scene.
In a somewhat ironic twist, the New York Young Republican Club highlighted discrepancies in his views by sharing an older post of Mamdani’s where he remarked about wanting to “refund” the police, raising questions about his current stance.
Other users on social media quickly picked up on this, recalling similar statements from him in the past. For instance, a post from November 2020 showed Mamdani declaring that “nature is healing.”
He had previously claimed that the NYPD was racist and a danger to public safety, suggesting a need for a significant shift in how police funding is approached.
Many criticized him for apparent contradictions between his recent comments and earlier accusations against law enforcement on his posts. Conservative commentator Gunther Eagleman called him a liar, pointing out that his base seems filled with individuals who oppose law enforcement.
Another media personality questioned whether Mamdani truly sought to refund police services, suggesting this could lead to chaos in the city.
Comments continued to pour in, with one user questioning the need for police in light of the recent events. Others accused him of being inconsistent and claimed that his rhetoric only added to the problems New York faces.
Overall, Mamdani’s remarks have sparked a debate about his beliefs and the impact they may have on public safety in the city.
