Mayor Mamdani Endorses Far-Left Candidate for Congress
Mayor Zoran Mamdani is advocating for a far-left candidate, Daria Riza Avila Chevalier, whom he described as a “perfect candidate.” Avila Chevalier has previously referred to America as a “terrible disgrace” and has generated controversy with her social media posts.
As the primary election looms, Mamdani expressed his support for Avila Chevalier, 32, during a media event at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. He is backing her against Congressman Adriano Espaira in the 13th congressional district, which includes northern Manhattan and parts of the West Bronx.
Avila Chevalier’s campaign has been marred by backlash following the resurfacing of derogatory posts she made, including attacks on veterans and police officers. In one now-deleted post, she humorously claimed she wiped her hands on an American flag, accompanied by a smiling emoji.
Despite this, Mamdani remains confident in his endorsement. “I think Daria Avila is the perfect candidate for this race,” he commented, adding that he was unaware of the posts until after he had voiced his support.
He also championed two other candidates: Claire Valdez and Brad Lander. Valdez is running for a seat in the 7th Congressional District, known for its progressive voters, while Lander is competing in the 10th District against incumbent Rep. Dan Goldman.
Mamdani emphasized the importance of these candidates, saying, “I hope every New Yorker has the opportunity to vote for them.” He sees their election as vital to making the city more affordable.
This push is perceived by some as part of a long-term strategy by Mamdani and other leftist operatives to influence the Democratic Party. While he actively endorses these candidates, he has remained silent on who he supports to replace retiring U.S. Rep. Jerry Nadler.
The current race for the 12th Congressional District includes various candidates, such as Micah Lasher, a former aide to Nadler, and others like Jack Schlossberg, the grandson of President John F. Kennedy. Nadler is backing Lasher in this competitive primary.
