Mayor’s Snow Day Decision Sparks Backlash

The newly elected mayor of New York City, Zoran Mamdani, is facing criticism after he announced that there would be no snow day for students during an expected severe winter storm.

Despite Democratic Governor Kathy Hochul declaring a state of emergency across New York, Mamdani stated that students would shift to online learning instead of having a day off to enjoy the snow.

“Honestly, my kid isn’t going to be distance learning to build a snowman or go sledding,” one parent expressed frustration. Mamdani confirmed on Friday, “I think kids who hear this are going to feel let down, but Monday will be either an online learning day or an in-person day.”

He further emphasized, “It won’t be a traditional snow day; that’s our final call.”

Forecasts indicate that New York City may receive up to 18 inches of snow with extremely cold temperatures this weekend.

Responses on social media have been negative, with one person saying, “I like this mayor, but this isn’t right! Let the kids have a snow day!” And another adding, “Snow days are a cherished tradition. I can’t believe he would deny that.”

Similarly, a user pointed out, “Mamdani talks about equity, but this just seems unfair. Studies show students lose out on learning during virtual days. This feels like a missed opportunity.”

Another critic remarked, “Doesn’t Mamdani realize this is a fundamental part of childhood? Snow days should be a given.”

As for Mamdani, he noted, “Weather predictions can sometimes miss the mark, but right now, we are expecting significant snow. This could be one of the largest snowfalls in years.”

“Snow will begin to fall late tomorrow evening or early Sunday morning,” he added. “It’s going to accumulate, that’s for sure.”
