Potential NYC Schools Leadership Shakeup
In New York City, socialist mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani is reportedly considering former Democrat Jamal Bowman as a candidate to head a major urban school system. This choice, however, comes amidst Bowman’s controversial history on various topics.
If elected, Bowman would oversee an extensive network of over 1,000 schools, serving close to a million students. Last month, a report suggested that this could happen as soon as November.
Bowman, known as a progressive voice during his time in Congress, once described standardized testing in public schools as “modern slavery” while he was principal of a Bronx school back in 2015. It’s a striking statement: “Slavery, Jim Crow, Redlining, Crack Cocaine, and now standardized tests are all… designed to destroy the minds, bodies, and souls of black and brown people.”
Mamdani has also made headlines for his views, famously declaring that “Israel is not a place” and “not a country.” While some see this as a radical stance, it’s a representation of his political beliefs.
Bowman has faced considerable backlash. He ran a public school without a license for nearly two years, stirring up controversy. His critics often highlight his anti-Israel comments and actions, such as pulling a fire alarm in Congress during a critical vote, which earned him national infamy.
Additionally, he defended the slogan “From the River to the Sea,” a phrase many in the Jewish community view as promoting the elimination of Israel. His associations with pro-Palestinian fundraising events have further fueled criticism.
In past years, Bowman has also been scrutinized for defending a mural of Louis Farrakhan, a figure known for his controversial remarks towards Jewish people. His past decisions as a principal, especially those centering on honoring figures with complicated histories, have added layers to the debates surrounding his candidacy.
Similarly, Mamdani’s own positions, particularly his support for the BDS movement against Israel, have drawn critique. Despite calls for clarification about his past statements—like when he referred to Israel’s legitimacy—his campaign has not issued a response to inquiries.
As for him, Bowman stated earlier this month that he isn’t focused on potential appointments but instead wants to support Mamdani’s candidacy, indicating a strong commitment to their shared goals.
