A recent poll indicates that Zohran Mamdani is currently leading the New York City mayoral race. The poll also reveals his strong stance on issues related to Israel and Palestine is resonating with voters.
According to a survey conducted between September 2nd and 6th, which gathered insights about voter preferences for different candidates, Mamdani topped the chart with 43% support. He was followed by former governor Andrew Cuomo at 16%, current mayor Eric Adams at 11%, and Republican Curtis Sliwa at 8%.
The survey also highlighted that 46% of respondents expressed sympathy for Palestinians, while only 29% showed support for Israel.
Mamdani has stirred controversy with his previous remarks on Israel, particularly regarding his reluctance to denounce terms like “globalization of intifadas.” Critics from the Jewish community have pointed to his associations with advisors who hold anti-Israel views as concerning.
Brooke Goldstein, a human rights attorney, labeled Mamdani an “anti-Israel extremist,” arguing that his candidacy reflects troubling patterns in political discourse. She emphasized a growing radicalization among students and the potential dangers of his election.
Concerns have also been raised about crime in New York City. Notably, a significant portion of voters prioritize safety, with 30% believing Mamdani would handle crime best; however, he trails other candidates in this area.
Additionally, Mamdani faced scrutiny for past statements regarding police funding and has drawn fire for connections to groups perceived as hostile towards Israel. This has led some, including a spokesperson from a ceasefire advocacy group, to warn that Mamdani’s potential election could worsen relations with Israel and increase anti-Semitism in New York City.
Despite controversies, the majority of the survey showed that 46% of voters still favored Mamdani over Cuomo, who garnered just 24%. Curtis Sliwa and Eric Adams received 15% and 9%, respectively.
Overall, the political landscape remains complex, with diverse opinions shaping the trajectory toward the upcoming election. Mamdani’s campaign appears focused on steering a narrative that prioritizes affordable housing and labor rights, contrasting sharply with traditional power dynamics in the city.
