New School Superintendent Announcement Expected
On Wednesday, Mayor-elect Zoran Mamdani plans to reveal that Kamal Samuels, an experienced educator and former superintendent in Manhattan, will take on the role of school superintendent, as reported by various sources.
Samuels, with nearly two decades in New York City’s public school system, has focused on fostering racial diversity through school mergers. He’s also worked against gifted and talented programs, which some critics argue have racial biases, according to City & State.
The chancellor manages the largest public school system in the U.S., which serves over 900,000 students across about 1,600 schools and employs roughly 135,000 staff members.
Chalkbeat highlighted that under the de Blasio administration, Samuels led initiatives aimed at enhancing diversity in select middle schools in Brooklyn, while also facilitating school mergers for better racial integration.
According to the New York Post, Samuels advocates for the International Baccalaureate program, reflecting his commitment to broadening student opportunities and supporting educators.
His appointment aligns with Mamdani’s campaign promises to transform education policies within his administration.
In an October interview with the New York Times, Mamdani shared intentions to refine a diversity plan originally put forth by former Mayor Bill de Blasio in 2021. This included plans to remove the Gifted & Talented test and adopt universal testing for kindergarteners by second grade.
Samuels has a background that began as an elementary teacher in the Bronx. He progressed to various leadership roles, including serving as a principal and later as superintendent for different community schools in Brooklyn and Manhattan.
Mark Levin, Manhattan Borough President, commented that running the Third Ward presents significant political challenges, noting Samuels’ sensitivity and adherence to his principles during difficult times.
Samuels will succeed the outgoing principal, Melissa Aviles-Ramos, who reportedly plans to stay in her role until then.
Mamdani is set to officially take office as New York City’s mayor on January 1st.
