Polls Show Mamdani Leading NYC Mayoral Race
With less than two months until Election Day, Zohran Mamdani is emerging as a frontrunner in the New York City mayoral race, according to two recent polls.
Mamdani, a 33-year-old member of the Democratic Socialists from Queens, surprised many in June when he secured the Democratic nomination, defeating former Governor Andrew Cuomo and several other candidates by a significant margin of 22 points.
In a Quinnipiac University survey released on Wednesday, Mamdani garnered 45% support among New Yorkers.
Meanwhile, Cuomo, running as an independent following his resignation amid controversy in 2021, stands at 23% support based on a poll conducted from September 4th to 8th.
Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa, co-founder of the Guardian Angels, holds 15%, while current mayor Eric Adams, who also opted to skip the Democratic primary, trails with 12%.
Defying the Odds
Interestingly, Mamdani’s polling lead over Cuomo remains consistent with findings from a New York Times/Siena University poll released recently, showing him at 46% compared to Cuomo’s 24%.
According to Mary Snow, director of polls at Quinnipiac, “Mamdani has a favorable wind at his back as the election approaches.”
Both Sliwa and Adams have promised to stay in the race, though reports suggest they are under pressure from some quarters, including advisors connected to Donald Trump, to consolidate efforts against Mamdani.
Comments from Trump
Trump, a former New Yorker turned Florida resident, declared that Cuomo has “a good shot” at defeating Mamdani, who he labels a communist.
He articulated hope that both Sliwa and Adams might reconsider their campaigns to unite against Mamdani, adding, “I think it’s a race we can win.”
A Quinnipiac poll suggested that, should Adams drop out, Mamdani would still lead Cuomo by a substantial margin.
However, another survey showed a tighter contest with Mamdani leading Cuomo 48% to 44% in a hypothetical two-way matchup.
Interestingly, supporters of Mamdani demonstrated higher enthusiasm compared to supporters of both Cuomo and Adams, presenting a positive outlook for his campaign.
If elected, the Ugandan-born Mamdani would not only be the first Muslim to lead the city but also the first millennial mayor.
His campaign has resonated with many voters, focusing significantly on affordability and cost of living, bolstered by notable endorsements from progressive figures like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Senator Bernie Sanders.
Mamdani’s proposals include fare-free public transit, rent freezes for municipal housing, free childcare for young children, and even a government-operated grocery store. He has adeptly utilized social media to connect with voters.
Polls indicate that crime remains the top concern for many voters, followed by affordable housing and inflation. A significant majority express dissatisfaction with the current direction of the city and the performance of Mayor Adams.
As they look to the future, most voters hope for a leadership that can effectively challenge Trump, particularly regarding immigration and crime issues.
