Mamdani Connects with Trump Supporters in NYC Primary

Zoran Mamdani, who emerged as the clear frontrunner in the Democratic mayoral primary in New York City, is emphasizing the importance of engaging with voters who supported President Trump.

“What we’ve discovered is that by persistently focusing on economic issues, being open to everyone, and shifting from lecturing to listening, we can re-engage these voters with the Democratic Party, as long as we demonstrate our commitment,” he stated.

“A lot of our wins came from neighborhoods that supported Trump in the last presidential election,” he noted. “We’re talking about areas like College Point or Dyker Heights, the very places many have written off as lost to us forever.”

In an analysis, it was observed that Mamdani managed to capture significant support in the districts where Trump had previously won 30% of the votes in 2024. The examination revealed that Mamdani also performed well in neighborhoods that had largely shifted towards Trump.

In a campaign video shot shortly after Trump’s victory, Mamdani engaged with Trump voters, discussing their main concerns such as grocery prices, rent, and overall affordability.

His campaign is anchored around these issues, demonstrating a significant 25-point lead over Trump, and he successfully garnered 84% of the vote in one Queens area that he spotlighted in November.

Mamdani’s outreach to Trump voters has energized many within the Democratic Party, especially as they look ahead to the 2024 elections.

This 33-year-old democratic socialist also highlighted his campaign’s focus on expanding voter registration, successfully registering thousands of new voters. He also received robust support from Asian and Hispanic communities as well as younger voters in quieter neighborhoods.

“There’s a large number of New Yorkers who didn’t participate in the primary before, and now they’re finding their place in our political landscape. They see their struggles reflected in our policies and are motivated to vote,” Mamdani remarked.
