Mamdani’s Campaign and Upcoming Trip to Uganda

Democratic socialist mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani revealed plans for extended trips to Africa during his campaign for mayor of New York City. Mamdani, who recently secured the Democratic nomination and beat Andrew Cuomo by over 12 percentage points, shared a video addressing potential backlash regarding his trip to Uganda.

In a lighthearted yet defiant manner, Mamdani mentioned receiving numerous messages suggesting he “return to Uganda where you belong” and “go back to Africa.” He emphasized the importance of listening to both supporters and critics. “I hear you, and I agree,” he said, confirming his trip back to Uganda.

Mamdani expressed that if he wins the mayoral election, he expects Cuomo might “move to Florida.” He plans to visit Uganda to celebrate his marriage with his wife, Rama, along with family and friends. “I’ll be back, and I want to apologize to those I don’t like,” he added, noting that he’d return by the end of the month.

In a bid to control the narrative around his travels, he floated humorous imaginary headlines that could appear about his trip. He teased that tabloid articles might read “Mia? Mamdani Africa” or “He’s Africa – Not Serious!” and even referenced journalist Carl Bernstein with a cheeky spin on his name.

Despite his dual citizenship with Uganda and the U.S., concerns have surfaced regarding his connections and past statements. Raised in South Africa, Mamdani moved to New York City at seven years old and owns undeveloped land in Uganda. He comes from a line of prominent figures—his mother is a noted filmmaker, and his father is a Columbia University professor involved with anti-Israel organizations.

His candidacy has raised alarms among some in the Jewish community, particularly due to his stance on various international issues. Critics have noted the apparent contradictions in his socialist platform, especially given his affluent background. While Mamdani has emerged as a front-runner after winning the primary, some key Democratic leaders are expressing caution.

It’s worth noting that while losing the general election in the Democratic primary is uncommon, Mamdani is still up against Cuomo, who recently announced his independent candidacy. The race also includes incumbent Mayor Eric Adams and other independent candidates.
