Mayor Mamdani Comments on Platner’s Campaign Collapse

New York City Mayor Zoran Mamdani recently chose not to elaborate on whether the downfall of former Democratic Senate candidate Graham Platner indicates larger issues within the progressive movement. Instead, in a Thursday interview, he emphasized the need to “bring closure to this chapter.”

During an interview with Errol Lewis of NY1, the host highlighted how Platner’s departure from the race ignited a national conversation about whether progressives have been too quick to back candidates who may not be suitable for leadership roles.

“This whole situation has sparked a debate regarding if certain progressives are sidelining more traditional Democrats by endorsing someone who isn’t really fit or ready to manage a campaign,” Lewis said, suggesting this might be an ongoing challenge for the progressive faction.

Mamdani shifted the focus back to Platner’s campaign, stating, “I think my focus now is how do I ensure I close this chapter and begin to write a new one. I trust the voters in Maine to guide us in the right direction.”

This isn’t Mamdani’s first involvement in a Maine race. Before Platner suspended his campaign, the New York mayor had commented on withdrawal from the race as being appropriate.

Interestingly, during the interview, Mamdani mentioned, “All the endorsements I’ve made have been here in New York City,” indicating that he has no plans to engage in elections outside his current locale. He had previously supported candidates like Claire Valdez, Brad Lander, and Darializa Avila Chevalier, all of whom were recently successful in their elections.

Mamdani didn’t endorse Platner directly, but their campaign was linked to Morris Katz, a senior advisor of Mamdani’s who had previously helped launch Platner’s campaign.

Platner’s campaign was riddled with controversies since its inception. One notable scandal involved a tattoo he had of a Nazi symbol, which he claimed he didn’t initially understand. Nonetheless, it was reported that he acknowledged it as “my Totenkopf” and revealed its meaning to a reporter.

Recent allegations against Platner also raised concerns about his behavior with former partners. An article detailed accounts from women connected to the Maine Democratic Party, including severe claims from Lindsay Fifield and Jenny Racicot. Particularly troubling was Racicot’s accusation that Platner had entered her home while intoxicated in 2021 and assaulted her. Platner has denied these allegations, but they have generated significant backlash.

This uproar prompted some of Platner’s staunchest supporters, including prominent figures like Senator Bernie Sanders, to withdraw their support.

Ultimately, Platner announced the suspension of his campaign, stating in a social media video, “I can’t continue to campaign.”
