Mamdani rejects label of communism even after urging to take control of production resources

Democratic candidate for New York City mayor, Zoran Mamdani, is facing backlash over remarks he made at the American Young Socialist Conference, where he encouraged attendees to stand firm on ideas like “seizing the means of production.” This is generating quite a buzz, especially since his comments align with a broader discussion on socialist principles that he feels remain sidelined in mainstream politics.

In a video shared with conference participants, Mamdani highlighted some popular issues such as student debt cancellation and universal healthcare that resonate widely. Yet, he emphasized the importance of advocating for less mainstream ideas, like Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) and other fundamental socialist goals. He suggested that not compromising on these beliefs is “critical,” even if he recently claimed he’s “not a communist.”

Mamdani elaborated on the necessity of organizing efforts to engage the community on these issues, stating that if they work collaboratively, they can effectively bring people along. He expressed that it’s essential to create a movement that can draw in supporters on a broader range of concerns.

Following the release of the video, former Mayor Bill de Blasio remarked that there’s some “exaggeration” regarding Mamdani’s views. In response, billionaire Bill Ackman cautioned that Mamdani’s brand of socialism is much more than a whimsical ideology; it’s a strategic plan for his campaign. Likewise, former President Donald Trump described Mamdani’s approach as concerning, suggesting it represents an extreme left shift within the Democratic Party and warned about the potential risks for the city should he be elected.

Mamdani’s campaign did not provide a prompt response to the criticism. Trump’s comments on Mamdani as a “communist madman” were particularly pointed. In an interview, Trump stated that Democrats have significantly shifted leftward, promoting what he views as radical ideas.

Over the weekend, Mamdani countered Trump’s “communist” label, telling NBC News that it was straightforwardly untrue. He referred to his political stance as democratic socialism and cited Martin Luther King Jr. to illustrate his vision of a fairer distribution of wealth in the U.S.
