Support for Zoran Mamdani at NYC Rally
During a rally in New York City, numerous voters expressed their support for mayoral candidate Zoran Mamdani, alongside Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.). Attendees at the “New York Is Not For Sale” event at Forest Hills Stadium, held on a recent Sunday, believe these figures represent the future of the Democratic Party.
Thousands turned out to support Mamdani, a 34-year-old self-identified democratic socialist who is currently leading in the race for Gracie Mansion. The combined presence of Mamdani, Ocasio-Cortez, and Sen. Bernie Sanders drew significant crowds during the city’s first weekend of early voting.
Nuala O’Doherty Naranjo, an immigration attorney from Jackson Heights, noted that if these candidates weren’t the future, political parties might not even exist. When asked about her identification with democratic socialism, she confidently stated, “I’m DSA all the way.”
Mamdani is associated with the New York City chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America, which has rallied behind his campaign. Some members voiced their support at the recent event.
Harry, a Brooklyn resident, highlighted Mamdani’s commitment to representing “all New Yorkers,” emphasizing affordability and safety as key factors for her support. She feels that Mamdani and Ocasio-Cortez undeniably embody the future of the Democratic Party, indicating this was evident in the overwhelming turnout at the rally.
According to Mamdani’s camp, Forest Hills Stadium saw over 10,000 supporters in attendance.
Harry expressed her view that socialism is fundamentally about advocating for the working class and ensuring everyone pays their fair share. Mamdani, in his speech, praised Sanders, saying he was the first to articulate the values of democratic socialism, which resonated with the audience as they collectively declared, “New York is not for sale.”
This rally marked a pivotal moment for the Democratic Party’s progressive wing, especially amidst growing frustrations over President Trump’s policies and after a challenging defeat in the previous elections in 2024.
Prominent leaders, including New York Governor Kathy Hochul, who backed Mamdani last month, also attended the rally. Despite receiving some heckling during her speech, calling for increased taxes on the wealthy, Hochul responded that she was “listening” to the crowd’s demands.
Attendees like Matt Ransdell, from Washington Heights, expressed excitement about Mamdani’s fresh approach to politics and his genuine concern for New Yorkers. He believes the trio of Mamdani, Ocasio-Cortez, and Sanders represents a much-needed change in the party.
Ransdell also noted the sense of community in the gathering, describing it as an “incredible amount of commonality.” He felt a contagious energy among those present.
Some attendees shared their hopes that Mamdani and Ocasio-Cortez could steer the Democratic Party in a positive direction, although there were mixed opinions about Mamdani’s brand of politics. Lane, a supporter, acknowledged that while not everyone is on board, he hopes the party moves toward the ideas represented by Mamdani.
Jessica, affiliated with a youth political action group, commented on how Mamdani’s platform has invigorated young voters, motivating them to participate in the electoral process. She underlined that younger generations are crucial to shaping the Democratic Party’s future.
Recent polling indicates Mamdani holds a substantial lead among registered voters. The figures show him at 49%, with his nearest rival at 28% and another candidate at 13%. Among likely voters, Mamdani’s support reportedly exceeds 50%.
