Mayor Mamdani Critiques Democratic Party’s Direction
New York City Mayor Zoran Mamdani expressed his thoughts regarding the Democratic Party in an interview with Rolling Stone on Tuesday. He characterized the party as being overly influenced by “highly paid consultants and big-money interests.”
Mamdani’s comments came in response to remarks made by former Democratic National Committee (DNC) Chairman Jaime Harrison. Harrison had voiced concerns after a candidate backed by the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) defeated an incumbent in a recent primary, despite having previously criticized the party.
“I don’t mean this out of malice or hostility,” Mamdani noted. “But if you have a disdain for Democrats, then don’t seek our nomination, don’t utilize our resources, and don’t rely on our volunteers.” He continued by stressing that political parties, while flawed, are shaped by countless individuals committed to grassroots efforts. “If you don’t believe in the party, don’t expect its members to help you succeed.”
In a somewhat pointed response, Mamdani remarked, “When someone claims not to have malice or hostility, I often wonder if they really do.” He emphasized the importance of recognizing the voters who support socialist candidates within the party.
“It might not reflect what has come to be our party, driven by high-paid consultants and wealthy interests, but it still showcases what many within the Democratic Party truly desire,” he explained. He went on to declare that the major demographic in the country is the working class. “This sentiment isn’t just local; it’s a nationwide phenomenon. People want a party that comprehends their needs and fights for them.”

In a previous interview, Mamdani criticized the Democratic Party for allegedly “losing its focus on working people” and called for deeper efforts to address rising costs. “Look at the four freedoms at the heart of the New Deal. There was a time when the party prioritized workers, and I’m eager to help bring that focus back,” he remarked.
However, during a discussion over the weekend, Mamdani seemed to struggle with providing a concise definition of the “working class.” He mentioned that this group includes those striving for “the basic dignity of life” but falling short, placing an income limit around $1 million yearly.
