New York Mayor-Elect Will Work with President Trump

Zoran Mamdani, the recently elected mayor of New York City, acknowledged having “many differences” with President Donald Trump. However, he expressed a willingness to set those aside for the city’s benefit.

“I will make it clear to President Trump that I’m ready to collaborate on any agenda that helps New Yorkers. Conversely, if there’s something that could harm them, I won’t hesitate to speak up,” Mamdani stated during a press conference. He emphasized the important choice New Yorkers faced, noting that both candidates were elected due to a shared desire for leadership that would address the cost-of-living crisis affecting residents.

The mayor-elect is scheduled to meet with President Trump at the White House on Friday.

Despite ongoing tensions, Trump has criticized Mamdani’s political views, labeling him a “communist lunatic” since Election Day. Before the election, Trump threatened to withdraw federal funding from New York City if Mamdani won, only to later assert, “We’re going to help a little bit” regarding the city.

During a news conference in Lower Manhattan, Mamdani, who identifies as a democratic socialist, underscored that the meeting would focus on issues of affordability. “When we mention the affordability crisis, we’re talking about significant struggles, like one in four New Yorkers living in poverty and one in five finding it hard to pay the bus fare, which is just $2.90. Daily life is increasingly unaffordable for many,” he added.
