Democratic mayoral contender Zoran Mamdani has managed to raise double the amount of his opponent, former governor Andrew Cuomo, in the past five weeks. Interestingly, most of Mamdani’s funding came from outside New York City, according to recent campaign finance reports.
Mamdani leads with a campaign fund totaling $1.05 million, compared to Cuomo’s $507,000, as revealed by the New York City Campaign Finance Committee’s latest disclosures filed on Friday.
Between July 12 and August 18, around 1,100 individuals contributed to Mamdani’s campaign. Notably, 53%—or about $532,000—originated from outside the city, while $490,000 came from local donors across five districts.
“We’re excited about the grassroots support we’re generating,” said a spokesperson for Mamdani, expressing confidence in their current momentum.
On the Republican side, Curtis Sliwa has attracted funding from an impressive 4,400 donors, which is four times the number of contributors Mamdani has seen.
Unlike Mamdani, Sliwa’s funding mostly comes from within the city; he raised $267,000—66% of his overall $407,000—from New York City, with the remaining $138,000 sourced from outside the five boroughs.
Cuomo raised funds from 732 donors, also exhibiting a mix of contributions both from within and outside New York City.
Additionally, Cuomo transferred $68,000 from his previous gubernatorial campaign fund after stepping down amidst controversy in 2021.
Mayor Eric Adams, running as an independent, raised $420,000, with 60% ($250,000) coming from city donors and $170,000 from elsewhere.
This financial boost significantly increases Mamdani’s resources. After accounting for matching funds, he holds around $4,392,480 while Adams has $3,934,924, Sliwa sits at $2,002,816, and Cuomo has $1,157,614 according to recent records.
Adams has been the most active in terms of campaign spending.
He has paid nearly $42,000 to a campaign consulting firm in the last five weeks and another $10,000 to his lead fundraiser, Brianna Suggs.
Suggs stated that her compensation aligns with the contract and reflects the range of services she provides, emphasizing the importance of integrating key campaign roles to enhance efficiency.
