Mamdani's tribute for Italian Heritage Month faces criticism from communists

Mayor’s Tribute Sparks Controversy

Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s recent tribute for Italian Heritage Month has ignited significant backlash online, particularly from Queens Councilwoman Vickie Paladino.

On social media, Mamdani expressed, “Happy Italian Heritage Month, New York. Here’s continuing to fight for Vito Marcantonio’s vision of a government that works for all working people.”

Marcantonio was a Congressman representing East Harlem for seven terms, initially as a Republican before joining the American Labor Party. He was noted for his opposition to the Korean War and had connections to the Communist Party, which caught the attention of the FBI during the Cold War.

Paladino didn’t hold back in her criticism, labeling Marcantonio as an “obscure Italian-American communist” and accusing Mamdani of pushing communist ideals.

She stated on social media, “Of all the great men and women of Italian descent who’ve contributed to New York City and the United States, this is the idiot he picks.”

Paladino challenged Mamdani to stop referencing his Italian roots, branding him as “physically incapable of being anything other than a loathsome propagandist for communism.”

In her response, she shared her family’s history, noting that her father fought against Italian forces during World War II, while her mother worked hard to support her five children as a single parent.

She reflected, “We wanted to become Americans, and our people were proud to learn the language and wave the American flag.” Paladino concluded by asserting, “That’s what being an Italian-American in New York means, not the communist propaganda Zohran is pushing here.”

Mamdani’s office has not yet addressed the criticism.
