Middle East Developments and Political Reactions
As President Trump aims for peace in the Middle East, overseeing hostages’ release and a significant cease-fire, the wife of New York mayoral candidate Zoran Mamdani expressed her grief over the death of a Palestinian social media influencer known for pro-Hamas content. Rama Dowaj has not addressed either the hostage situation or the recent agreement reached by Trump.
Following the reports of Saleh Al Jafarawi’s death, who was known online as “Mr. FAFO,” Dowaj shared four broken heart emojis on Instagram. Al Jafarawi, 27, became notable for his viral pro-Hamas videos during the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict and notably celebrated the October 7 attack that resulted in the deaths of around 1,200 Israelis. Dowaj also referred to him as her “beloved Jafarawi” in a follow-up Instagram Story.
Al Jafarawi was killed amid new clashes in Gaza involving rival Palestinian factions. Footage on his social media showed him wearing a press vest at the time of his death. Hamas’ al-Aqsa TV confirmed that he was reportedly accompanying militants when he was fatally shot. He had documented the conflict from within Gaza, sometimes broadcasting from his hospital bed after experiencing attacks and inaccurately reporting casualties.
In a contrasting narrative, President Trump announced that a pivotal peace agreement was achieved in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, effectively ending two years of conflict. Trump, alongside leaders from Egypt, Qatar, Turkey, and several European nations, heralded the ceasefire and the return of hostages as “an answer to millions of prayers.” As he prepared to address Congress upon arriving in Tel Aviv, 20 Israeli hostages were released via the Red Cross.
The agreement signed Monday outlined plans for Gaza’s demilitarization, the establishment of a civilian police force, and a comprehensive humanitarian initiative aimed at rebuilding the region. Trump asserted that U.S. aid would not support “bloodshed, hatred or terrorism,” highlighting that Gaza’s reconstruction relies on stability and accountable governance.
Although there has been a general sense of relief over the hostages’ release, Dowaj remains silent about both the release and the peace accord facilitated by Trump. Her quietude stands out in light of her prior pro-Palestinian posts, including a significant image featuring a keffiyeh scarf, emblematic of solidarity with Palestinians and Hamas, which echoes her husband’s critiques of Israel.
Mamdani, the Democratic candidate for New York City mayor, has earlier made accusatory remarks, suggesting that U.S. policies reflect “financial genocide” during an appearance on Qatari television. He has opposed the phrasing “globalizing the intifada” and proposed separating the city’s pension fund from Israeli government bonds. Furthermore, he characterized Israel’s response to the October 7 Hamas attack as “genocide” and asserted intentions to arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu should he visit New York.
