Mamdani’s Wife Grieves Loss of Pro-Hamas Influencer Who Celebrated October 7 Attack

Mayor’s Wife Mourns Influencer’s Death

The spouse of Zoran Mamdani, a leading candidate for mayor of New York City, appears to have paid tribute to Saleh al-Jafarawi, a Palestinian influencer who had previously expressed support for Hamas following their attack on Israel on October 7, 2023.

Al-Jafarawi, a well-known activist who gained prominence after celebrating the violent events of October 7, has reportedly been killed in the Gaza Strip amid ongoing clashes involving Hamas and other Palestinian factions. The situation is still developing, with multiple reports highlighting the chaotic nature of the conflict.

In a response to his death, Mamdani’s wife, Rama Douwaji, uploaded a photo of Jafarawi to her Instagram, noting her grief with several heart emojis. She shared another post referring to him as her “beloved Jafarawi.” It’s interesting—this personal touch, it kind of humanizes the political landscape a bit, doesn’t it?

Jafarawi, often dubbed “Mr. FAFO” in the Israeli media, initially celebrated the October 7 attack, where Hamas killed a significant number of civilians and took hostages. However, he was later seen weeping in a video following Israel’s counterattacks on Gaza. Allegations about him embezzling funds meant for residents of Gaza have also surfaced.

Interestingly, some influencers had falsely reported his death previously, which just adds another layer to the chaotic narrative of social media in conflict zones.

Eilon Levy, a former Israeli press secretary, expressed mixed feelings about Jafarawi, describing his charisma and creativity while highlighting the dark side of his online persona. Levy cited Jafarawi’s ability to engage audiences using a variety of roles, which made him a striking figure in the media landscape.

Mamdani’s campaign, however, has not provided any comments regarding these developments. They’ve faced criticism in the past for not denouncing inflammatory rhetoric associated with violence against Jews. Remarkably, while Mamdani condemned some actions by Hamas, he has also directed harsh criticism at Israeli leadership.

A recent Quinnipiac poll indicates that Mamdani leads the mayoral race with 46% support, followed by former Governor Andrew Cuomo with 33% and Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa at 15%. However, Mamdani is now under scrutiny for possible illegal foreign donations amounting to $13,000 to his campaign, raising questions about the integrity of his funding sources.
