A 49-year-old man was found dead with a stab wound to the neck Sunday morning in the basement of a swanky hotel in lower Manhattan, police said.
The man was unresponsive and unconscious when officers found him in a basement bathroom at the Public Hotel shortly after 11 a.m., authorities and law enforcement officials said.
Officials told The Post that the deceased was not a registered guest at the Bowery Hotel and was found next to him holding a knife.
According to police, the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
It was not immediately clear whether the stabbing was self-inflicted or the result of a homicide. According to police, no arrests have been made.
The NYPD said the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will determine the cause of death. The investigation is ongoing and the man’s identity will be released pending notification of his family.
The man’s body was discovered after a large wedding was held the night before on the roof of the hotel, where rooms cost between $200 and $400 a night, guests told The Post on Sunday afternoon.
Guests said the alarm went off just before 11 p.m. Saturday night, and then an announcement was made to ignore the alarm and that it was not an emergency. It is unclear whether the alarm was related to the stabbing or when the man sustained the knife wound.
Hotel staff were instructed not to speak to Post reporters who were staying Sunday afternoon.
The Public Hotel offers multiple bars, restaurants, and workout classes open to the public. The amber-lit escalator often appears as a backdrop for visitors’ Instagram photoshoots, and even appeared in the opening credits of this past season’s Saturday Night Live.
