After Maynard’s death, West Virginia Gov. Jim Justice ordered all state and federal buildings in West Virginia to fly flags at half-staff until Wednesday when services were held.

The judge addressed a police officer’s memorial service at the Mingo County high school gymnasium, followed by a 40-mile procession attended by hundreds of law enforcement officers and local residents.

“There’s a lot of evil in this world, and things seem to get worse the further you go,” Justice said. “This is incredibly tragic. We lost a young man with a very young family. And it’s really bad, it’s just plain bad.”
