Man damages church with sledgehammer before hitting cop with Stanley cup

A Palm Bay, Florida man is facing multiple charges after allegedly causing $10,000 worth of damage at a church and then hitting a police officer with a Stanley tumbler, according to court documents.

According to an arrest affidavit filed by the Palm Bay Police Department, 24-year-old Timothy Donald Bornman is charged with conspiracy to commit theft, criminal damage to property at a place of worship, assault on a police officer and resisting arrest, all felonies.

Officers responded to a 911 call about a man breaking into Mission Church in Palm Bay on Saturday around 5:15 p.m.

When officers arrived on scene, they encountered Bornman wearing only shorts and holding a metal Stanley tumbler.

Police said Bornman was seen walking through the church parking lot yelling and cursing at church members.

According to the affidavit, one of the officers approached Bornman, who quickly told the officer, “I’m going to kill you,” and walked away.

The officer reportedly pulled out a police-issued electric stun gun and ordered the defendant to stop walking and get on the ground.

Bornman allegedly complied with orders by sitting on the ground, but then got up again and tried to leave.

Police allege that Borneman approached another officer on the scene in an aggressive manner and attempted to strike the officer over the head with a stainless steel cup. The officer reportedly dodged the cup, but Borneman allegedly struck the officer in the shoulder with the cup.

Police said Bornman punched the officer and then tried to run, prompting another officer to use an electric stun gun on him.

Police said a dart was fired from the gun and struck Bornman, causing an electrical current to knock him unconscious and cause him to fall backwards onto the sidewalk.

When officers attempted to handcuff Bornman, he allegedly resisted for a period of time before the officers were successful.

Prior to Bornman’s arrest, church members reportedly told police that the suspect had broken into a shed behind the church property and retrieved a sledgehammer.

Bornman allegedly went to the front of the church with a sledgehammer and broke down the door to get in. He then began destroying everything in sight, allegedly causing more than $10,000 in damage to the church.

Police said after reading Borneman his Miranda rights, he confessed to breaking into the church and causing damage inside.

The man also told police he broke in and caused damage because the church had stolen everything from him, police said.

Bornman was taken to Palm Bay Community Hospital for treatment and then booked into the Brevard County Jail.
