Man hospitalized in critical condition after gunfight with St. Louis officers during domestic disturbance

A man is hospitalized with what police say are life-threatening injuries after a “shootout” with two St. Louis County employees.

Police received a call about a domestic disturbance just after 7 p.m. Wednesday, and a St. Louis County sergeant was told the man was intoxicated and refusing to let the caller leave, police said. Tracy Panas said. Police were told the man was armed.

Two officers arrived and saw a man on the porch with a handgun in each hand, Panus said.

“They tried to talk to him. They ordered him several times to drop the weapon. They tried to de-escalate the situation,” she said.

But the man “fired his weapon at the officers, and a gunfight ensued,” Panus said. Both officers fired at the man. The police officers were not injured. Panus said investigators do not yet know whether the suspect or the police officer fired first.
