Ryan Routh Sentenced to Life for Attempted Assassination of Trump
Ryan Routh, convicted for his attempt to assassinate Donald Trump at a Florida golf course in September 2024, has received a life sentence. This decision was made on Wednesday by U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon, following a conviction on five federal charges. These charges included attempting to assassinate a prominent presidential candidate and assaulting a federal officer, along with several firearms violations.
Prior to his sentencing, Routh addressed the court for around 15 minutes, reiterating points from his defense during the trial. He claimed to be a good person and mentioned his alleged involvement in recruiting for the Ukrainian military.
However, Judge Cannon interrupted him, labeling Routh as an “evil person” who posed a serious threat to President Trump. The judge stated that Routh would have succeeded in his attempt if a Secret Service agent hadn’t noticed him concealed with an assault rifle.
Routh had previously dismissed all his court-appointed attorneys, opting to defend himself despite lacking any legal training. Throughout the trial, he submitted a series of odd legal documents, including a proposal for a prisoner exchange and a suggestion to play golf with Trump. He even stated that if Trump won, he could execute him, but if Routh won, he would take over the presidency.
When the jury’s verdict was announced after the two-week trial, Routh’s daughter reacted by leaving the courtroom in distress. In a dramatic moment, Routh attempted to stab himself with a pen before law enforcement intervened.
