In a Double-A Midland game on June 30, infielder Ryan Lasko collided with teammate Devin Taylor while both were trying to catch a fly ball. Although Taylor emerged unscathed, Lasko remained on the ground for about ten minutes before needing assistance to leave the field.
After the incident, Lasko was taken to Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Plano, where it was discovered that he had fractured the C6-C7 vertebrae in his spine. He underwent surgery for spinal decompression and stabilization, but as of now, he still lacks feeling in his lower body.
On Wednesday, A’s beat reporter Martin Gallegos shared a photo on his X account, featuring Lasko smiling and giving a peace sign. In the post, it was mentioned that he was with family in New Jersey, wearing a neck brace, and received a message from A’s Manager Mark Coetzee expressing support.
At this point, there’s no major update on Lasko’s recovery—things are still a bit uncertain. However, the team remains hopeful that he could regain sensation in his legs.
In an Instagram post two weeks ago, Lasko expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support, saying, “I truly feel loved and appreciated by everyone who has reached out to me. I am doing well and am on the road to recovery. It will be a long process, but I hope I can get back to doing what I love. Thank you again to everyone.”
The entire Athletics organization showed their solidarity with Lasko on Wednesday. All players donned “22 Strong” T-shirts, featuring his name and number on the back.
This season has been especially tough for the Athletics, who have dealt with several injuries, including infielder Joshua Clodagh-Grauer, who suffered a ruptured testicle earlier this week and also required surgery.
