Manchester City dip their toe into this new-fangled 36-club-strong Champions League pool. The 2023 winners take on the team they beat to finally claim the European crown, so allow a little pre-match time for some good old reminiscing. Then it’s down to business, with City flying: the Community Shield already in the bag, four Premier League wins out of four, nine goals already for Erling Haaland. By comparison, the champions of Italy aren’t in such good form, with two wins and two draws to open their defence of Serie A, but Internazionale kept City honest last year in Istanbul and tonight they’ll no doubt do so again. Kick-off is at 8pm BST. It’s on!

Main Events

23 minutes: A cute diagonal pass from De Bruyne down the left channel almost set Grealish free in the box, and Inter managed to push him away, but the crowd went wild. Inter's bold start left the crowd a little quieter.

Share

21 minutes: Acerbi reacted to an outswinging shot but his header was just wide of the target, and manager Simone Inzaghi will be pleased with how his team have started the game, looking fairly composed on the touchline at the moment.

Share

20 minutes: Calhanoglu has another chance to shoot and takes a fierce shot, but it hits Akanji and leads to Inter's first corner of the night. Calhanoglu shoots from the right.

Share

19 minutes: Inter looked the more dangerous side up to this point, but it was Sommer who made the first crucial intervention: Luiz crossed from the right and Haaland jumped high to head the ball towards goal, but it went straight at the keeper, who managed to catch it.

Share

18 minutes: Taremi robs the ball from a dozing Rodri and launches a counter attack with Thuram. City are sparsely defended but the Inter duo overthinks themselves on the edge of the box, getting in each other's way and allowing a few more defenders to move in. The ball eventually finds Calhanoglu, whose weak shot goes wide to the right.

Share

16th minute: …That said, a cute backheel from Varela breaks City's press and Inter go up on the counter. Thuram wins the ball on the right side of the D. He's offside this time, but he falters with the ball between his legs. He finally regains his composure but then swerves a weak shot wide right.

Share

15 minutes: After a fairly interesting start, this match came to a complete halt – something any mid-60s Inter team would be happy about.

Share

13 minutes: Ederson stands still for a really long time with the ball at his feet. No one is pressuring him so he doesn't try to pass. In the end he kicks the ball up and City lose the ball. A bit strange and probably not Pep's Plan A.

Share

11 min: It was now Inter's turn to dominate the ball, with the visitors circulating it at the back for a while, and the 2023 runners-up making a confident start.

Share

9 min: Inter are definitely, maybe, looking to attack down the right flank. Another long ball down the wing, Darmian and Thuram chasing it. Akanji sees the danger and moves to the side to clear it.

Share

8 min: Taremi again penetrates City's half, this time through the middle. He gets past Thuram on the right but the flag goes up for offside. It's a careless move from Thuram. He was looking along the line and didn't need to go so quickly. Barella and Calhanoglu are also in the attack. A great chance was wasted.

Share

6 min: Space opened up on the left for Taremi, who cut into City's half and switched the pass to Thuram on the right. Thuram got to the edge of the box and fired a low shot straight at Ederson, who saved it. It was a sign that, while City would dominate the ball, Inter would have something to say on the counter.

4 minutes: De Bruyne slid Grealish into space on the left, Grealish spun sideways into the box and passed to De Bruyne, whose shot was blocked by Bastoni, who stretched out his leg in time to clear the ball.

2 min: Drive around town with dependable style.

The city is on the move. They quickly took the lead, with a blue moon ringing out at the Etihad.

The team is out! A new version of the Champions League has been released. City fans don't seem to like it either. Boo! Inter are lacking in sportsmanship that The shirts are a bit off-putting, with Manchester City wearing their cream, pink and sky blue fourth kit, while Manchester City are wearing their cream, pink and sky blue fourth kit – they should have asked Johnny Marr to design it.

Let's take a peek inside Inter's changing rooms…maybe for the first time ever. The Nerazzurri New shirt. Huh? Well, according to official marketing, the jersey features “a bold geometric pattern that subverts traditional vertical stripes and remixes shapes inspired by the city's unique skyline to reflect Milan's design connection.” A shout out to the people who brought us City's Hacienda shirt and Manchester United's stunning kit.

Inter returned several star players after Sunday's 1-1 draw with Monza. Alessandro Bastoni, Piotr Zielinski, Nicolò Barella and Hakan Calhanoglu all returned, but Lautaro Martinez was dropped to the bench.

preamble

Manchester City have entered the new Champions League pool of 36 clubs. The 2023 winner will face the team they beat to finally claim the European crown. So let's take a moment to reminisce before the match. Then the match begins. City are on a roll. They've already won the Community Shield, won four games in four Premier League matches and Erling Haaland has already scored nine goals. By comparison, the Italian champions aren't doing so well, with two wins and two draws in their Serie A defence, but Internazionale kept City honest in Istanbul last year and will certainly do so again tonight. Kick-off is at 8pm BST. It has begun!
