After a week of FA Cup action, we clamber back aboard the Premier League treadmill, with some fascinating games ahead at both ends of the table. With a one-point lead to protect at the top of the table, Liverpool travel to Nottingham Forest, where they lost last season, despite their hosts being bottom of the table at kick-off. This season, the team from the City Ground are just four places higher and looking over their shoulders.

Second-placed Manchester City host Manchester United in a derby the bookies expect the reigning champions too win with a minimum of fuss, with few giving Erik ten Hag’s side a snowball’s chance in hell of beating their noisy neighbours. In third place, Arsenal don’t play until Monday, when they will be expected to swat aside a Sheffield United side who are bottom of the table, 11 points from safety.

Elsewhere at the bottom, Burnley host a Bournemouth side who are without a win in seven games, while Luton will hope to bounce back from their 6-2 midweek FA Cup shellacking at the hands of City by taking something from their game against Aston Villa at Kenilworth Road. Brentford, who are far from safe, host their out-of-sorts west London rivals Chelsea.

Newcastle United: As usual, when it comes to reporters on Friday, Eddie Howe ranks first. His Newcastle side are churning out goals at an alarming rate, but they aren’t playing particularly well at the moment. They host Wolves tomorrow in a top-flight game that is really hard to call.

First up is the FA Cup. Newcastle could have beaten Blackburn this week with a little more composure in front of goal, but then suffered a disastrous draw away to Man City in the quarter-finals.

“I was driving at the time and almost ran off the road,” Howe said. “It’s certainly not the draw we wanted. I don’t know if any team wants to play Manchester City four times in a season, but we’re looking forward to the game. I believe we can beat anyone if we’re at our best, and we’ve had three really close games against them this season.

“When you analyze things and think about it in your head, you realize that if you want to win the FA Cup, you probably need to beat Manchester City at some stage in the competition. We’re moving forward and we’re just going to do our best to win.”

Rafael Benitez interview: Rob Draper traveled to the Galician coast to meet the itinerant Spanish manager, who many predict will lose his job as Celta Vigo manager if they fail to win against bottom-placed Almeria tonight. He seemed to be doing surprisingly well. A fascinating read that captures his passion for coaching, his enthusiasm for Xabi Alonso and his love for Jamie Carragher.

    The weekend starts here…

After a week of action in the FA Cup, we’re back on the Premier League treadmill with some fascinating fixtures at both ends of the table. With a one-point lead at the top of the table, Liverpool head to Nottingham Forest, who they lost to last season, despite the home team being bottom of the table at kick-off. This season, the City Ground side have moved up just four places and are looking over their shoulders.

Manchester United, who host Manchester City in second place in the derby, will also snowball into Erik ten Hag’s side with a hell of a win over their noisy neighbours, with bookmakers expecting the reigning champions to win with minimal fuss. Few people give them a chance. Third-placed Arsenal do not play a game until Monday and are expected to beat Sheffield United, who are at the bottom of the table with 11 points difference.

Other bottom-of-the-table Burnley are at home to Bournemouth, who are winless in seven games, but Luton hope to take something from their game against Aston Villa to beat City 6-2 in the FA Cup in midweek. They will be hoping to bounce back from their crushing defeat. Kenilworth Street. Far from being safe, Brentford are now at home to their outrageous west London rivals, Chelsea.

With several other high-profile fixtures coming up, we’ll keep you up to date with all the manager’s press conferences, as well as any other notable updates to report from the EFL, Women’s Super League and beyond. I will deliver it.
