Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin of Kentucky and independent Sen. Kyrsten Sinema of Arizona have thwarted Democratic plans to seize control of the nomination from President-elect Donald Trump.

Both Mr. Manchin and Mr. Sinema have undermined Democratic efforts to advance extremist policies in the Senate, drawing the ire of Democratic lawmakers everywhere. Following this criticism, Sinema left the Democratic Party and declared independence in 2022.
Neither Manchin nor Sinema will return to the Senate after their vetoes and will seek reelection. Sinema's seat will be replaced by Democrat Ruben Gallego, while Manchin's seat will move from Democratic control to Republican control.
