Manchin Calls for an End to Political Power Struggles

During an appearance on Fox Business Network’s Morning with Maria, former Senator Joe Manchin (I-WV) reiterated his desire to conclude his pursuit of what he refers to as “raw political power,” a sentiment he expressed in his memoirs.

Manchin, a former Democrat who became an independent, shared his hope that Republicans would secure a Senate majority in 2024, emphasizing the importance of maintaining the filibuster.

Reflecting on his tenure under President Biden, Manchin stated, “I mentioned this because I felt it would be beneficial for Republicans to gain control of the Senate based on my experiences and observations.” He continued, indicating the heavy emotions he had experienced over recent years.

He recounted a significant moment when Chuck Schumer aimed to eliminate the filibuster, noting it was he and Senator Kirsten Sinema who opposed that move in 2021. He expressed that such a shift could dramatically alter political dynamics, allowing either Democrats or Republicans to act without restraint.

“I now caution my Republican colleagues,” he warned. “They promised me they wouldn’t eliminate the filibuster before I departed, but it seems they are now reconsidering.” Manchin stressed the importance of preserving bipartisan cooperation in the Senate and highlighted a need for collective unity rather than division. “It’s essential that we come together. I’ve been encouraging President Trump to take on a unifying role to help calm the nation.”
