Former Senators Mitt Romney (R-UTAH) and Joe Manchin (IW.Va.) have joined the board of directors of the Responsible Federal Budget Committee, a well-known Washington, DC-based think tank focusing on fiscal policy.
The organization's chairman Maya McGuinneas said in a statement Wednesday that the addition highlighted “the committee's long-standing commitment to promoting a bipartisan solution to our country's fiscal decline and working to propose solutions for elected American leaders.”
“Both former senators were solid advocates for responsible budgeting, but more than that, they don't avoid working across the aisle to bridge the ideological division and find solutions that can point America in the right direction.”
During Congress, both Romney and Manchin, who left the Democrats last year and left the independent Democrats, introduced legislation aimed at establishing a finance committee that explores how to tackle the country's debt. They were also known to split from the law parties due to financial concerns.
“Importantly, both have been working with common sense reforms to address the rise in debt to lead the efforts to advocate for Trust Fund reforms to strengthen Social Security and Medicare, and to establish a financial committee that focuses on the mentality of practical solutions,” MacGuineas said Wednesday.
Romney and Manchin are on a list of other widely known politicians such as former Ohio Gov. John Kasicch (R) and former Sen. Heidi Heitkamp (DN.D.), and Elskin Bowles.
