Mangione defense fund exceeds $1 million

Luigi Mangione, who stands accused of murdering United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson late last year, has seen his fundraising efforts exceed $1 million.

The GiveGosend campaign has raised over $1,042,000 with a target of $1,500,000 as of Tuesday afternoon.

This fund has attracted contributions from more than 28,000 individual supporters, with an average donation of about $20. The money is intended to cover expenses related to all three of Mangione’s criminal cases.

Mangione is charged with attacking Thompson in Manhattan on December 4th.

Last month, a federal judge in New York charged him with four offenses, including stalking, firearm violations, and murder with a firearm. The Department of Justice has indicated that if Mangione is convicted, he could face the death penalty, a stance they have maintained since early April.

He entered a not guilty plea before a federal judge on April 25th.

Attorney General Pam Bondy has previously stated that the prosecution will regard the killing of corporate executives as “acts of political violence.”

Mangione is also facing state-level charges in Pennsylvania and New York, having pleaded not guilty to 11 counts from Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, as well as four charges in Pennsylvania.

Authorities report that Mangione allegedly fled the city after the murder of Thompson, who was due to attend an investor meeting. He was apprehended five days later in Altoona, Pennsylvania, while in possession of a loaded firearm and a silencer.

Tuesday also happens to be Mangione’s 27th birthday.

One anonymous contributor who donated $27 remarked, “Happy birthday to the man, mythical and legendary Luigi Nicholas Mangione.”
