Eric Swalwell Ends California Gubernatorial Campaign Amid Misconduct Allegations
Democratic Representative Eric Swalwell has halted his campaign for governor of California following serious allegations of sexual misconduct. In addition, the Department of Homeland Security is looking into claims that he employed a Brazilian nanny without proper work documentation, allegedly paying her around $89,700 from campaign funds between 2021 and 2025. Criminal defense attorney Donna Rotunno commented on possible criminal and immigration issues involved.
Meanwhile, the Manhattan District Attorney’s office is investigating sexual assault accusations against Swalwell, which surfaced just last week, prompting him to step away from his bid to succeed Governor Gavin Newsom. The House Ethics Committee has also initiated its own inquiry into the sexual misconduct allegations.
A former staff member has claimed that Swalwell assaulted her on two occasions while she was intoxicated, one instance taking place in New York City in 2024. The details were reported in an article published by a local newspaper.
The woman, who prefers to remain anonymous, stated that she began working in Swalwell’s district office in 2019 when she was 21. According to her, the married Swalwell initiated unwanted advances shortly after her hiring. She alleges he sent her inappropriate photos and proposed sexual activities in public. On one occasion, she said she woke up naked in his bed after a night of drinking.
This investigation is connected to allegations regarding a late-night meeting where the two met for drinks after an event in Manhattan. The woman reportedly recalled telling Swalwell “no” but felt unsure about the details of that night. Three days later, she confided in a friend about her belief that she had been assaulted.
She emphasized that her concerns extend beyond her personal experience, suggesting that it’s vital to know whether a potential governor respects and protects the rights of women. “No one could protect me from him. So I have to protect young women like me who aspire to work in this field,” she expressed.
Despite the allegations, Swalwell has strongly denied any wrongdoing and has issued an apology to his wife in a recorded address. He mentioned his intention to contest the allegations but still decided to withdraw from the gubernatorial race.
Since these accusations came to light, additional women have also reported their own allegations against Swalwell.
